Men make a Father's Day pledge

Apostle Frederick K.C. Price, center in white suit, and his son, Crenshaw Christian Center Pastor Frederick K. Price Jr., left, are surrounded by hundreds of men of the church on June 17, Father’s Day, to take a pledge of honor and commitment to families. They were led in the pledge by Apostle Price. The pledge was taken from the Christian film “Courageous,” which revolves around the lives of four Albany, Ga., police officers and their family challenges.

Each answer requires more clarity

My father—Hendrick Bernard Johnson—who was gunned down by the sheriff’s deputies in 1987 when I was 9 years old, left my mother a widow, and me looking for a model to follow. It was heartbreaking for me, and it took some time to get over it. My father had two strikes against him, and I’m told an addict for some reason lied and said he had a gun. The end began with a long chase, but concluded with my father being shot 21 times on 92nd and Central Avenue. The deputies believed he was reaching for a gun, but no gun was found.

Blacks and Latinos are targets, groups say

NEW YORK, N.Y.—On Father’s Day, June 17th, the NAACP and a diverse group of civil rights activists, civil liberty advocates and outraged community members will march silently down the streets of New York City to protest stop-and-frisk policing. Under Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s policy, hundreds of thousands of innocent people are stopped, interrogated and humiliated by the NYPD each year simply for walking down the street, the groups says, charging that the police employ racial profiling on a daily basis, and the large majority of those stopped are Black or Latino.

Will commit to God and family

Taking a cue from the film “Courageous,” on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17, about 400 men at Crenshaw Christian Center will take a pledge of honor and commitment to God, their wives and children. The group will repeat the pledge as it is read by Apostle Frederick K.C. Price, founder of the church.

Those men participating will receive a formal copy of the pledge, which will be signed by Pastor Frederick Price Jr., to be hung in their homes as a reminder of their commitment.

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
