7 year-old boy injured

LANCASTER, Calif.—A Lancaster woman whose grandson fell as he tried to get back into a moving vehicle after a scuffle with his brothers was in custody today on suspicion of felony drunken driving, sheriff’s deputies said.

Marie Shipley, 55, was arrested Monday afternoon and booked on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, sheriff’s Deputy Paul Schraeder said.

Other driver also drunk

VAN NUYS, Calif.—Three children were turned over to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services this morning after the van in which they were riding collided with a car in Van Nuys and authorities determined both drivers were drunk, police said.

The children were not properly secured in the van but none were seriously hurt in the accident, which occurred on Van Nuys Boulevard just north of Valerio Street around 12:30 a.m., said Sgt. Don Kelly of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

Child restraint law violation

LANCASTER, Calif.—A Lancaster mother pleaded not guilty today to allegedly driving drunk and flipping an SUV, injuring six children.

Stanesha Nicole Allen, 31, was charged with six counts each of child abuse and child restraint law violation, along with single counts of DUI causing injury and driving with a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol content causing injury, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

SANTA ANA, Calif.—A Long Beach fire captain pleaded guilty today to drunken driving and other charges stemming from a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist.

John David Hines, 38, of Huntington Beach, was sent to a state prison for 90 days for a “diagnostic evaluation” program that provides treatment and recommends prison time or probation, Deputy District Attorney Andrew Katz said.

DUI checkpoints, seatbelts, speeding

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers will be out in force on the July Fourth weekend, on the lookout for motorists driving drunk, speeding, or otherwise violating traffic laws.

The CHP’s Maximum Enforcement Period, during which all available officers will be assigned to patrol duties, will begin at 6 p.m. and will continue until 11:59 p.m. Monday, said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
