Breach-of-contract

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Chris Rock and a Hungarian model have reached a settlement of a breach-of-contract suit she filed against the 47-year-old comedian alleging he broke an agreement to keep their relationship confidential.

“The matter has been resolved,” attorney Neville Johnson said on behalf of his client, Monika Zsibrita.
Johnson did not divulge the terms of the resolution.

More than a decade ago, Zsibrita filed a paternity action against Rock.

Hollywood by Choice

“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” is maddeningly funny. You actually laugh all the way through the film. The adult humor is laughingly mixed with the children’s humor; it may fly above the kids’ heads, but not the adults’.

“Madagascar 3” is the third installment of the billion-dollar “Madagascar” franchise, starring Ben Stiller as Alex the lion, Chris Rock as Marty the Zebra, Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria the hippo and David Schwimmer as Melman the giraffe.

Cause of death unknown

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Film and stage director-producer Gilbert Cates, who helmed 14 Academy Awards shows and headed UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television in the ‘90s, was found dead in a parking garage at the university, authorities confirmed today. He was 77.

Wide-ranging event involves more than 60 venues

In the wake of World War II, the cultural center of the earth moved west from Europe across the pond to New York City. In the following decades, the Big Apple cast a long shadow, obscuring everything, including the Golden State on the North American continent’s opposite side.

As a result, the popular perception of Los Angeles has been one of a sun-kissed bastion devoid of content, attributable mainly to the superficial glitter of the entertainment industry that dominated its environs.

Only 300 in the nation owned by African Americans

LANCASTER, Calif.—There’s a new beauty supply store in town, and what’s odd about it is—unlike most others—owned by a Black person. Originally from South Africa, the owner’s name is Andy Alame.

Dee’s Beauty Supply opened up a little more than a month ago on Lancaster’s east side. After checking out the demographics of the area, Alame figured this was the spot to be. And he was right.

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
