Apple Valley resident counseled addicts

 Los Angeles, CA - Dock Ellis, former major league pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, died Friday Dec. 19 of liver disease at County-USC Medical Center. He was 63.

The Apple Valley, Calif. resident was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver the day after Thanksgiving.

Ellis reportedly suffered heart damage within the last few weeks that made a liver transplant impossible, leaving him on life support.

St. Lawrence of Brindisi Church will celebrate its Centennial Anniversary with two days of festivities beginning Saturday, Sept. 27 with a multicultural Street Faire including performances by the St. Lawrence Choir, Latin Jazz by Billy Mitchell and Bobby Rodriquez, The Crenshaw Praise Dancers and the New Hope Mass Choir.

 A “Taste of Watts” vendor’s row, health services information booths, and children’s activities including a petting zoo, rides and face painting is also planned. The free and open to the community celebration will take place on the streets bordering the church on Compton Avenue between 103rd Street and Century Boulevard.

Former L.A. pastor succumbs

Dr. Charles H. Belcher, former pastor of congregations in Los Angeles died suddenly on Aug. 9, in St. Louis, Mo. The celebration of his life was held on Aug. 13, at the St. John AME Church in St. Louis, where he served as pastor.
