Operating budget to be reduced

Sacramento, CA – Recognizing there must be shared sacrifice in these tough economic times, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) and Assembly Rules Committee Chair Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) yesterday announced a 10% cut to the Assembly’s operating budget.

Florencia 13 face conviction in U.S. District Court

Los Angeles, CA - Ten members and associates of the Florencia 13 street gang were convicted Monday on a range of federal charges, including drug trafficking, racketeering and attempted murder, according to news sources.

Prosecutors told jurors of a widespread criminal enterprise directed by Mexican Mafia members.

The gang was known for allegedly shooting African Americans who came into the neighborhoods in which the gang operated and controlled drug distribution in unincorporated areas of south Los Angeles and Huntington Park.

Chamber of Commerce president joins L.A. City commission

 Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Michael S. Jones was recently appointed to the City of Los Angeles Quality and Productivity Commission.

This body is designed to provide Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council with additional private and public sector experience, expertise, information and recommendations related to improving productivity and work measurement within city government.

Leon Jenkins heads L.A. branch

 Geraldine Washington, president of the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP for the past 12 years, has stepped down from the position effective January 2009.

Washington has been replaced by former Detroit, Mich. district court judge and NAACP first vice president Leon Jenkins effective Jan. 1st.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
