Professional, minority women partner for service and networking

Los Angeles, CA – Sistahs Taking Action (STA), a new group that brings together professional, minority women to network while serving communities in need will gather this Saturday, Jan. 24 to participate in the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s “Feed the Soul While Helping the Hungry,” event from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will help sort incoming food, assemble food packages and assemble backpacks full of food for needy children.

John Chiang defers tax refunds

State Controller John Chiang said that if the California budget deficit is not resolved, beginning Feb. 1, his office will defer tax refund checks as well as payments to recipients of Social Security Insurance (SSI), the State Supplement Program (SSP) (aged, blind and disabled), grants for college and other programs and individuals.

According to a spokesperson for the Controller’s office, the federal government has tentatively agreed to cover the full cost of payments such as SSI and SSP.

International Black Firefighters address cooking fire injuries and deaths

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters (IABPFF) announced its STOP Fire Campaign, which addresses residential cooking fire safety for African-Americans, with specific attention to two groups: parents and caregivers of children four to 14-years-old and seniors ages 65 to 85. The campaign’s theme is Fire-Safe Cooking: A Recipe for Saving Lives.

NAMI sponsor vigil to highlight incarceration instead of treatment of the mentally ill

The Urban Los Angeles Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is holding a candlelight prayer vigil for justice Sunday from 5-6 p.m. in front of the Twin Towers Correctional facility, 450 Bauchet St., in downtown Los Angeles.

The purpose of the vigil is to: (1) pray for public understanding of mental illness as biological brain disorder; (2) pray for more housing facilities where people can be transitioned from arrest to treatment; (3) pray to raise the awareness of the criminalization of the mentally ill where mental illness means incarceration.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
