State and local elections on the horizon

Los Angeles, CA - While the historic 2008 presidential elections are now fading to a much treasured memory, many local candidates are heading into the home stretch in a number of races.
Primaries are set for March 3 in the cities of Los Angeles, Carson, Gardena as well as the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Community College District.

Tax seminar offers guidance

Los Angeles, CA - Tax returns are the most misunderstood documents in business finance, and a seminar by L.C. Green and Associates Inc. in conjunction with the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC), on Jan. 22 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. will help clear up some of the confusion.

Bernard C. Parks

Councilmember Bernard C. Parks joined the L.A. Police Dept. and community at a candlelight vigil for victims of the “Grim Sleeper” serial killer who has been active for over two decades.The vigil was held at the corner of W. Colden Avenue and S. Figueroa Street, the location of a third billboard.The next billboard is scheduled to be located at the intersection of Western Avenue and Century Boulevard on Jan. 19. SCE outage mix-up cleared

A notice that Southern California Edison (SCE) customers in the Florence-Firestone area received about a planned power outage on Jan. 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is apparently a mix-up, and in fact the routine maintenance will not happen that day but will take place on Wednesday Jan. 21. A SCE spokesperson also said that all routine outages (except for emergency work) planned for Jan. 20 will be deferred. For more information about the outage, call SCE at (888)759-6056.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
