The celebration of the life of Ruby L.W. Davis Jones

The celebration of the life of Ruby L.W. Davis Jones was held on January 11, in the Sanctuary of Sierra at Inglewood Park Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Jones, associate pastor of Victory Baptist Church, officiated.

Other participants include the Rev. W.E. Jenkins, pastor of Victory; Elder William Hicks of West Angeles Church of God in Christ; Lillie Love, Edith Aubert and Samuel Spann.

Bishop Blake honored at city hall; special worship service at Brookins AME

Bishop Charles E. Blake, actor Forest Whitaker and artist Artis Lane will be honored by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at an awards ceremony to officially kick off the City’s African American Heritage Month celebration at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, in City Hall Council Chambers, 200 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Southern California’s best bands and drill teams marched in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Kingdom Day” parade Monday

 It was a day of pomp and pagentry as some of Southern California’s best bands and drill teams marched in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Kingdom Day” parade Monday. Hundreds of spectators clapped and cheered along the parade route as the youth displayed showmanship and sass. Teams participating in the parade included the Audubon Middle School band and drum squad; Compton’s Centennial High School; the Mudtown Drill and Drum Squad; spectators; and Crenshaw High School marching band./OW Photos by Shirley Hawkins.

Parents outraged over son’s drive-by murder

 Los Angeles, CA. - The parents of Clayton Montgomery, 15, described their son as an active, lively teen.

“He loved football, basketball and dancing,” recalls his mother, Juana, who said her son eventually danced with the professional clown troupe Tommy the Clown.

One of six siblings, Juana said that Clayton was close to their family and that he was also very protective of his four sisters.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
