LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A father and son are expected to be sentenced to federal prison terms today for their roles in the illegal trafficking of South African rhinoceros horns in a case brought as part of a nationwide crackdown on the black market in endangered animal parts.

Bomb squad searching residence

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — An explosive device found in a man’s vehicle during a traffic stop today prompted authorities to go to the motorist’s Palms-area residence, where a number of possible explosive devices were found, police said.

A bomb squad was sent to the apartment building in the 3800 block of Overland Avenue about 6:30 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Jackson was having trouble learning dances

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — AEG Live considered “pulling the plug” on Michael Jackson’s comeback concerts 11 days before the pop icon died, the show’s choreographer testified Tuesday.

Travis Payne, who worked closely with Michael Jackson in his final days, earlier testified that in Jackson’s last rehearsals before his death he was “not at show standards but he was rehearsing, he was processing.”

Taken to hospital for psychiatric evaluation

LYNWOOD, Calif. — Sheriff’s deputies from the Century Station were credited today with saving a man who was standing on a roof, armed with a knife, screaming for someone to kill him.

Deputies were called to the 10500 block of Long Beach Boulevard on Monday afternoon to deal with the distraught man, who was pacing back and forth, lowering the knife, and then placing its tip on his chest, according to Century Station officials.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
