NIH Breast Cancer Research seeking more African American women

NASHVILLE, TN—Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, the Presiding Prelate for the Thirteenth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church is encouraging A.M.E. church to spread the word about the Sister Study, a landmark breast cancer study to learn how environment and genes affect the chances of getting breast cancer. Bishop McKenzie also challenges other faith leaders across the country to help spread the word to women in their congregations and communities.

Voters face five measures on March ballot

Vote for sanction nears

 Los Angeles, CA – Workers at the Southern California Gas Company have voted overwhelmingly, by a four to one margin, to authorize a strike if a tentative agreement between the company and the workers could not be reached. On Jan. 25, over 3000 workers attended the strike vote meeting. The contract is due to expire at midnight on Jan. 31, 2009.

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas presents 2009 Annual Budget Summit

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – As part of his pledge to make government more inclusive and responsive, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and the Empowerment Congress will host the “2009 Annual Budget Summit: We are the Second District, Empowered for Change,” Saturday, January 31 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hawthorne Memorial Center, 3901 W. El Segundo Blvd. (at Prairie Ave.)

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
