Joins thousands of Americans struggling against foreclosure

When Alvin Clavon received a foreclosure notice on his South Los Angeles home that he shares with his wife and three boys, he was stunned.

Clavon purchased the home in 2003 with a fixed rate loan. Two years later, he worked with a mortgage broker to refinance his home with another fixed rate loan. But just before he was to sign, a friend from church offered the family an interest-only, adjustable-rate mortgage.

Public policy at forefront

The Los Angeles African Women’s Public Policy Institute’s (LAAAWPPI) fifth class began on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 on the campus of University of Southern California. The Class of 2008 is comprised of 19 dynamic women who represent a diverse cross-section of careers in the legal, nonprofit, corporate, education, public service, social service and public policy sectors to name a few. The Institute’s unique approach to leadership development is done by applying the methods and principles of public policy and their relationship to all aspects of life.

Local photog gained international acclaim

California native Steve Grayson was born July 12, 1960 and died on Jaunuary 26, 2008. Steve’s passion for photography brought him to WireImage, the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, the Los Angeles Sentinel, the Riverside Press-Enterprise, Allsport USA and also served as contributing/contract photographer for the Associated Press, United Press International, The Los Angeles Times and Reuters News Pictures.

Councilman wants divestiture in banks not participating in foreclosure assistance.

 Los Angeles, CA – Tuesday, Los Angeles City Councilmember Richard Alarcón introduced a motion aimed at decreasing the devastating effects of foreclosures in Los Angeles. The motion, which was seconded by Council President Eric Garcetti and Councilmembers Ed Reyes, Janice Hahn and Bernard Parks, instructs the City to explore the divestiture of all deposits in banking and other financial institutions that fail to cooperate with foreclosure prevention efforts.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
