Maurice Holton mourned

Maurice Holton was born on May 22, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of the late Raymond and Dolly Holton. He was the sixth of eight children.

Maurice was educated in Chicago and, while attending Calumet High School, he was active in the arts and drama department, which ultimately led to his relocation to Los Angeles.

After a brief stay at home and a lengthy stay at Brotman Hospital, Maurice departed this life on Sunday, February 17 at 9:40 p.m.

Suspect flees on foot

 Los Angeles, CA -- Passengers scrambled off the 40 line Monday night around 9 p.m. when a gunman pulled out a firearm and shot another passenger.

The shooting occurred as the bus came to a stop at Crenshaw Boulevard and West 60th Street in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles.

The victim was exiting the bus when he got into a dispute with the assailant. Officer Karen Smith of the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Section said that the two were apparently members of rival gangs.

Eighty seniors evacuated

 Inglewood, CA -- Elderly residents at the Regency Towers senior citizen complex in Inglewood were evacuated Saturday when an apartment fire killed one resident and injured 17 others.

About 80 seniors, some in wheelchairs, were evacuated by firefighters from the senior 100-unit, seven story housing complex as a wall of thick smoke swirled through the complex. Eight residents were treated for injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to minor cuts and scratches.

Baca foresees $72 million budget gap

 Los Angeles, CA -- Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca recently told a local news outlet that budget cuts may force the closure of the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles and perhaps a second detention facility because of an estimated $72 million budget gap.

William T. Fujioka, the county’s chief executive, stated that Baca’s statements were premature.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
