Man killed in drive-by

 Los Angeles, CA -- An investigation continues into the shooting death of Ronald Buckner, 20, which occurred on Monday at about 9:35 p.m. in the 3100 block of West 59th Street in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles.

Witnesses told police that the gunman was one of five people in a red Dodge charger. The victim was shot several times as the car drove through the residential area.

Buckner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Former teen mom provides free prom attire

Patricia Lankford vividly remembers the sacrifices she had to make in order to afford a prom dress during her senior year in high school.

“I was a teen mom at 13 years old, and I had to go to work to get my prom dress,” said the hazardous waste worker, who was born of a teen mom as well.

Taking the job meant giving up a nursing class, something that Lankford thinks about to this day.

Law would require medical clearance for elective cosmetic surgery

SACRAMENTO - The Colton, CA niece of Donda West, the mother of entertainer Kanye West, who died following cosmetic surgery, has sought out 62nd District State Assembly member Wilmer Amina Carter (D-Rialto) to introduce legislation calling for a requirement that any person, prior to undergoing elective cosmetic surgery, have a medical clearance from a licensed physician.

Two community activists combat grief and gun violence in South Los Angeles

Each year, gunfire claims the lives of hundreds of citizens in South Los Angeles–a pervasive fact that leaves scores of friends and family grieving and in pain. With nowhere to turn, many grapple with unresolved pain and anger that can affect them the rest of their lives.

Attempting to heal the wounds of those who have lost loved ones to gun violence has become an urgent mission for Bettye Sweet and Vicky Lindsey. Both mothers have lost family members to gun warfare.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
