Yvonne Brathwaite Burke

Marina Del Rey, CA -- Former Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke joined colleague Don Knabe, yesterday, in the renaming of Admiralty Park in Marina del Rey for Burke.

The park, running alongside Admiralty Way, will be known as Yvonne B. Burke Park. Parking is in Lot No. 7, adjacent to 4350 Admiralty Way.

County to develop plan to use $12 million in federal stimulus funds

 Los Angeles, CA -- The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has directed the county staff to come up with a plan for how to use more than $12 million in federal stimulus funds for homeless prevention programs.

To be eligible to receive the funds, the county must submit a plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development by May 18 on how best to use the money.

Candidates offer diverse backgrounds

Inglewood, CA -- As the country struggles to break through the economic shroud that has engulfed so many people, Inglewood voters (48,426 in the city and 52,743 in the school district) are set to go to the polls to elect city council members for two seats and school board members for three offices.

Nine candidates are vying for the two council posts including the two incumbents, while 11 individuals—including two incumbents—are seeking spots on the school board.

Gunfire claims lives of young males

 Los Angeles, CA -- Despite police reports that crime is down in the city of Los Angeles, gun violence continues to rock South Los Angeles.

In a 48-hour period from Sunday March 29 through Monday, March 30, deadly shootings rippled through South Los Angeles, claiming the lives of four young men.

On March 29, a 21-year old man was shot to death in the incorporated area of Florence, according to sheriff’s deputies.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
