Alvin Burton exhibit at the Washington Irving Library

 Los Angeles, CA -- Alvin Burton began to seriously pursue photography in 1944, the year he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Los Angeles.

The L.A. native started his journey with the now iconic Speed Graphic camera, the industry standard for press photographers for half a century.

Rep. Waters secures $10 million

Los Angeles, CA -- Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35) announced over $10 million in federal funding for 19 projects throughout her Congressional District. Funding for the projects was included in the fiscal year 2009 omnibus appropriations legislation passed by the United States Congress and recently signed into law by President Obama.

Tales of matriarchs weaved at concert

Los Angeles, CA -- In honor of Mother’s Day, the Vineyard storytellers will take the stage to perform and share their personal experiences in a special “Tell Me A Story” storytelling concert.

There will be heart warming tales of memories of their mothers, grandmothers, teachers, and other strong women in their lives, as well as humorous accounts of their own experiences as mothers.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
