Massive repaving project to generate jobs

Compton, CA -- A massive repaving project, 1,266,000 square feet of asphalt, is planned for the Compton/Woodley Airport. Federal stimulus finds will pay for the $8 million job.

Everything but the runways and taxiways will be resurfaced to improve drainage and pavement markings.

The project is expected to generate 222 construction and service jobs. Timelines have not been announced.

Candidates detail priorities

 Compton, CA— The approximately 37,000 registered voters in the Hub City eligible to go to the polls April 21, will make a decision on the seven city government posts that are up for grabs. There are also several initiatives on the ballot including a controversial proposal to ban the sale of fireworks in the city.

Endorsements

 OurWeekly has no formal endorsement of the candidates in the Tuesday, April 21 city election.

Based on the information submitted, or lack thereof, we are recommending that the residents review past performances of incumbents and investigate the challengers as to their involvement in their communities and commitment to the safety and growth of Compton.

As far as the two initiatives, we are recommending that you vote NO on Measure F which would ban the sale of fireworks in the city of Compton.

In addition to the candidates, residents are being asked to vote on two ballot initiatives.

Measure F

Measure F would amend the city charter to ban the possession, storage, sale and/or use of any fire works within city boundaries. The City Attorney estimates that there should be no fiscal impact on the city.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
