A promising life cut short

If you drive in South Los Angeles, you’ve probably spotted the sprinkling of billboards depicting a young woman smiling brightly in her high school graduation picture.

The photo is of 21-year-old Los Angeles resident Nicole Harvey, who became a victim of a homicide last January. Her killer or killers have yet to be found.

Tapped by Schwarzenegger

Sacramento, CA -- Termed out Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick has been appointed as the California Recovery Act Inspector General, and will start her new position on April 27.

Governor Schwarzenegger appointed Chick to this position, which is said to be the first such post in the nation; and the Los Angeles politician will take a job which pays $175,000 annually and is expected to be a two-year stint.

Effective immediately

 Los Angeles, CA -- Downtown Los Angeles rides on the DASH bus line will continue to cost 25 cents to board the bus, however, free transfers have been eliminated, effective immediately.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) will offer a monthly DASH pass for $9, which allows unlimited use on all DASH lines.

DASH fares can also be paid for with LADOT Commuter Express/DASH monthly passes or the county-wide EZ transit pass.

Ridley-Thomas celebrates local super centenarian

 Los Angeles, CA -- During a program filled with musical tributes and well wishes, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas visited the Western Convalescent Home in Southwest Los Angeles on Monday to celebrate the 115th birthday of Gertrude Baines, the world’s oldest person, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

“Gertrude Baines is a beacon in our community, who at 115 has demonstrated perseverance in the truest sense of the word,” Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
