Farmers Insurance and Black Educational Events plan Black college tribute in September

 Irving, TX -- Black Educational Events, LLC (BEE), a privately owned events and publishing company located in Irving, Texas, announced Monday that it will focus its efforts over the next 18 months on an expanded program for the 2010 Farmers Insurance Group Angel City Classic (ACC). The company also announced plans to produce an event celebrating the mission of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) this September in Los Angeles, the site of the annual ACC.

Three-day event lauds gospel legends

 Los Angeles, CA -- Edna Tatum, radio announcer extraordinaire, will receive the 2009 Black Business Expo (BBX) Mahalia Jackson Gospel Legends Award during the West Coast GospeLive concert on Sunday, May 3, 4 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center’s Tom Bradley Hall.

The awards ceremony will be held during the 20th Reunion celebration of BBX. Tatum will be presented the award by Harold Hambrick, BBX president and John Phillips, radio announcer and previous honoree.

Family distraught over disappearance

 Los Angeles, CA -- The family of Channa Kingcade are distraught over the disappearance of the 41-year old woman who has been missing for over two weeks. Her family is asking for the public’s help in locating the mother, who has a 14-year-old daughter.

Results are in

Compton, CA -- Compton’s hotly contested primary election race held Tuesday toppled contenders and reinstated formerly elected officials.

Provisional ballots must still be counted and certified election results will be available next week.

Mayor Eric J. Perrodin handily won the mayor’s race with 3,041 votes over candidates Joyce Harvey Kelley and Lynn Boone.

Lillie Dobson won the Second District City Council race with 2,738 votes over Gwen Patrick and Elias Acevedo.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
