Drew Univ. announces ‘new’ executive team

Los Angeles, CA -- In the wake of the May 4 exit of Susan Kelly as head of Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, the school’s board of trustees has appointed a leadership team to take over the role of president at the 43-year-old medical school.

The trio will stay in place until a new university president is found in a search that will happen in what board chair Bart H. Williams, called a “measured way.”

Elgin Baylor lawsuit claims racial discrimination by real estate mogul

Los Angeles, CA -- The Los Angeles branch of the NAACP will honor Donald T. Sterling, Clippers owner and alleged racist, with one of the organization’s highest accolades. On May 14 at the Roy Wilkins Freedom Fund Awards Gala, Sterling will be given the Humanitarian Award. The honor is granted to community activists, contributors, and those who have shown outstanding leadership in the campaign for civil rights. The event will be held at 5:45 p.m. at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown L.A.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass met May 8 with California African American pastors and faith leaders to discuss the current budget crisis and the upcoming ballot propositions.

Speaking bluntly, Bass told the attendees, “Our house is on fire and we have to put the fire out.”
Bass went on to describe the tough position the governor and the legislature faced in determining how to close the state’s projected $42 billion shortfall.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
