Elgin Baylor lawsuit claims racial discrimination by real estate mogul

Los Angeles, CA -- The Los Angeles branch of the NAACP will honor Donald T. Sterling, Clippers owner and alleged racist, with one of the organization’s highest accolades. On May 14 at the Roy Wilkins Freedom Fund Awards Gala, Sterling will be given the Humanitarian Award. The honor is granted to community activists, contributors, and those who have shown outstanding leadership in the campaign for civil rights. The event will be held at 5:45 p.m. at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown L.A.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass met May 8 with California African American pastors and faith leaders to discuss the current budget crisis and the upcoming ballot propositions.

Speaking bluntly, Bass told the attendees, “Our house is on fire and we have to put the fire out.”
Bass went on to describe the tough position the governor and the legislature faced in determining how to close the state’s projected $42 billion shortfall.

Mothers weep for slain sons at Mother’s Day Breakfast

It was a sight that moved the audience to tears at the Crystal Park Casino in Compton, California.

Hosted by Compton Mayor Eric Perrodin and organized by Project Cry No More and the Southern California Cease Fire Committee, approximately 50 mothers lined up Saturday morning in the ballroom of the casino at a Mother’s Day Breakfast entitled “Bridging the Bond.”

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
