Congresswoman Maxine Waters fasts in solidarity with people of Darfur

Los Angeles, CA -- Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35) participated in the Darfur Fast for Life Tuesday, consuming water only but no food, to show solidarity with the people of Darfur in Sudan and bring attention to the ongoing genocide there.

Community invited to free event

Congresswoman Diane E. Watson (D-33) sponsors a free Foreclosure Prevention Forum to discuss the impact of the economic downturn and how to survive this crisis. The forum will be held Saturday, May 31, 1 p.m. at Los Angeles High School, located at 4650 West Olympic Blvd.

Bill impacts judicial selection process

“AB 2095 provides us with the opportunity to achieve the goal of transparency as it applies to the selection process of judges in the state of California,” Assemblyman Mike Davis (D-Los Angeles) said Tuesday.

The current judicial appointments process uses anonymous individuals on local committees from various regions, who vet judicial aspirants prior to submitting the applications to the State Bar’s Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE).

Parents protest; Council seeks details

A coalition of African American and Latino parents from schools throughout the region gathered at the Los Angeles Unified School District Seven office on Western Avenue and 106th Street Friday morning, to protest removal of Carol Truscott and Scott Braxton. The parents claim the two are being used as scapegoats in the matter of how Steven Rooney, a former Markham administrator, was returned to a school site, after allegations of improper conduct with a student surfaced.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
