Cell tower approved for Baldwin Hills

Despite protests from some area residents, the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission okayed a zoning permit approving construction of a nine-antenna T-Mobile tower on the roof of a CVS Pharmacy at the corner of Slauson Avenue and Overhill Drive in Baldwin Hills.

Some 550 residents signed a petition opposing the antenna because of fear the structure would lower property values and pose potential health risks.

State Attorney General sues Countrywide

Calling Countrywide Financial a “mass-production loan factory, producing ever-increasing streams of debt without regard for borrowers,” Attorney General Jerry Brown filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court Wednesday seeking to stop what it alleges are the company’s deceptive practices and seeking monetary damages.

Angels for Sight helps the underprivileged

When it comes to angels, Shay Hamilton could certainly qualify.

Through her Compton-based, non-profit Angels for Sight organization, Hamilton helps deliver the gift of sight to hundreds of underprivileged children and adults by offering eyeglasses at no cost--and the big hearted entrepreneur pays for it out of her own pocket.

As the director of community outreach for the Los Angeles Eye Institute several years ago, Hamilton was struck by how many underprivileged children and adults needed eyeglasses.

Ensures transparency in judicial selection process

A measure to release the names of individuals who assist the Governor in choosing court judges cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday and is expected to be considered by the full Senate as early as next month.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
