Owners of substandard buildings to be held accountable

AB 2925, targeting owners of substandard properties by holding them accountable has passed the Assembly.

The bill’s author, Assemblyman Mike Davis (AD48), states that AB2925 will require an owner of a property that is uninhabitable or otherwise found to be in substandard condition, to provide their local enforcement agency with current contact information and a plan of correction.

County agrees to seek bids

Los Angeles County supervisors met Wednesday to discuss extending the county’s jail phone services’ current telecommunication lease.

Their decision was in favor of not extending their current contract after it expires in 2010 and to request a proposal for a new contract.

$80 million cut would devastate state HIV care, prevention and endanger thousands

Los Angeles, CA -- AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), Monday, condemned Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wide-ranging proposal to eliminate general funding for virtually all of California’s life-saving HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs from the state’s fiscal year 2010 budget. The proposed cuts, which would take effect July 1, 2009, came just days after the governor announced plans to terminate the state’s entire $24.6 million HIV prevention portfolio as a cost-saving measure.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
