Compton’s got swing

It is common knowledge that budget cuts in public schools often mean so-called “non-essential” programs like art, music, etc. are scaled back drastically or eliminated all together.
A group of retired educators in Compton saw this happening in their local schools and decided to step in and try to make a difference.
In 2004, they formed the Compton Conservatory of Music with the intention of supplementing the music education programs in Compton Schools.

Black history month festivities

Carson, CA – The City of Carson will be hosting its annual Black history month celebration this Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center, located at 801 E. Carson St. in Carson. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
The evening will be an exciting, entertaining, and educational showcase of poetry, music, dancing and more. Local performers and afterschool talent will participate from various parts of the city.
Guests will also have the chance to enjoy unique art depicting the event theme.

Golden State Mutual succumbs to ‘progress’

From the 1920s through the 1960s and most of the 1970s, people in the African American community would tell stories of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance company (GSM) coming to the door to collect premiums.
Today, the once venerable Black business is on the brink of extinction, and a former president and chief executive officer says the reason why has been both bane and a blessing to the African American community.

Blue Line station upgrades proposed

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will hold its final community workshop Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon to discuss changes and upgrades to the Wilmington/Imperial/Rosa Parks Blue Line station.
The workshop will be held in the cafeteria at Ronald McNair Elementary School, 1450 W. El Segundo Blvd., Compton.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
