Ensures transparency in judicial selection process

A measure to release the names of individuals who assist the Governor in choosing court judges cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday and is expected to be considered by the full Senate as early as next month.

School board votes to take district in new direction

Citing research and experience in other locations, the Los Angeles Unified School District Tuesday approved a new small schools policy that is being called historic and exciting and what it will take to change the educational path for many students in the nation’s second largest public school system.

The policy authored by School Board Vice President Yolie Flores Aguilar and co-sponsor by Board President Monica Garcia, and Board Member Richard Vladovic, is designed to transform the majority of the district into small schools by the year 2020.

City of Carson might be in for a smelly summer

Apparently shopping comes with a high price in the City of Carson-a very smelly one. An agreement involving contractor Javier Weckman and the city’s redevelopment agency which was approved by the Carson City Council in 2006 is now being put into action. The arrangement will allow construction crews to turn a former Carson City dump into a shopping center.

Increased airline bag charges do not benefit workers

It is customary for airline travelers to tip skycaps for what some might blindly say a small job, but if you ask most passengers they would tell you that amid the chaotic atmosphere of a typical American Airport, the aid of a skycap is anything but irrelevant. Handling a nations’ worth of bags, weaving wheelchairs of the handicapped through almost ever-present heavy traffic full of seemingly disoriented people scurrying to their terminals, and directing vehicles to almost hidden destinations, are just some of the services skycaps provide to frequent flyers .

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
