A new look at race in America

On March 16, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles will examine the role that race plays in contemporary American life and culture. This special event will feature a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary “Legacy: Black and White in America.”

Community Financial Resource Center 2010 Power Luncheon

Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel will be the special guest speaker at the Community Financial Resource Center 2010 Power Luncheon March 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center of Los Angeles County, 135 N. Grand Ave. In addition to Greuel, the event will honor outstanding business and community leaders. These include Shani Chen and Joseph H. Jones, owners of Ohsune Body Care. They are being recognized for Outstanding Small Business Achievement. United Way of Los Angeles will be honored as the Outstanding Community Reinvestment Partner.

New Speaker targets jobs and budget reform

Getting people back to work and approaching the budget in a more human way are two of the top priorities for new Speaker of the Assembly John Perez.
Perez, a Los Angeles Democrat who talked about his humble circumstances growing up that were ameliorated in part by a loving, supportive family, was sworn in as the 68th Speaker of the Assembl Tuesday.

John Frierson named first African-American chairperson of the California State Athletic Commission

For the first time in its long history, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) welcomed an African-American as its chairperson.
John Frierson, the new chair, was recently elected chairman by his peers, after serving on the commission since 2002. 
“I am overjoyed with this position,” said Frierson, who was re-appointed to the commission in the fall of 2009  by former California Speaker of the House, Karen Bass.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
