AV families confide in one another

Lancaster, CA - In March 2007, a little girl named Precious, who was six-years-old at the time, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancerous bone disease. Neighbors, teachers, and relatives noticed a difference in Precious’ play behavior. She limped, dragged her foot, and complained about pain in her leg. But she tried to hide it from her mother, Chemina Hanley.
“After about a month (of unusual behavior), I took her to the doctor,” Hanley said. “I figured, she was in first grade. She probably fell off the monkey bars or something.”

Urban League pushes job creation plan

According to Valerie Wilson, vice president of research at the Urban League, this plan is not a first for the 100-year-old civil rights organization.

Foster care contract ended

Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 yesterday to cut ties with a foster care monitoring agency that was responsible for supervision at a home where 2-year-old Viola Vanclief was beaten with a hammer and died as the result of her injuries on March 4.
Vanclief died of blunt force trauma from a hammer, the coroner’s office determined. Her foster mother, Kiana Barker, 30, told authorities she accidentally hit the child with a hammer while trying to free her from a bed frame in which she was trapped, according to coroner’s records.
