Jail cell versus the classroom

It brings me to tears sometimes thinking about how many naturally gifted Black men there are who could have been the next Ben Carson or the next Thurgood Marshall or even the next Barack Obama, but can’t because they are serving maximum sentences in prison.
In 2000, there were 791,600 Black men in prison compared to 603,032 in college. By contrast in 1980, there were 143,000 Black men in prison and 463,700 in college. This is an appalling statistic, and it makes me wonder how this happened.

Despite Obama, fashion industry still lacks diversity

In the dawn of a new day for American culture, we celebrate the opportunity of diversity and the promise it offers Blacks in America. We also wake up daily watching our Black President address the nation and often the world, and we are filled with hope and the possibility of a dream come true; a chance at equality. However, in the midst of this dream, there lies a harsh reality in the glamorous world of fashion--there is still a stunning lack of opportunity for models of color.

Convalesce

Let that thing that beats inside your chest
Take a rest
Relationships from the past put you under a lot of stress
So convalesce
Let me take your bags
While you undress
I got that bubble bath water running
So you can convalesce
And no this ain’t a quest
Or me playing chess
I just want to look out for you
And do what’s best
Cuz in love, you make it so easy to be
Good fruit can only come from a good tree
You are the fruit of beauty
So be my guest
And convalesce
