The Showtime Lakers’ first NBA title

May 16 marks the 30th anniversary of one of the landmark sports events in Los Angeles history. On that Friday night in 1980, the Los Angeles Lakers took a 3-2 finals lead into Philadelphia in a quest to clinch the National Basketball Association (NBA) title. The culmination of the evening’s events would mark the first major accomplishment of a team that would be called “Showtime.”

Budget battles key concern

The 47th Assembly District represents communities as diverse as South Los Angeles, Culver City, Palms and Koreatown. It is territory with almost equal percentages of European Americans (31 percent) African Americans (29 percent) and Latinos (25 percent).

The district also tends to be more well-to-do than many in urban Los Angeles with fewer single, female-headed households in poverty.

Nothing but a re-run

Set to take effect in late July or early August, activists claim that outrage over the law has “awakened a sleeping giant,” as rallies demanding federal immigration reform continue to sprout in cities across the country.

College void of scholarly thinking

I do not feel at home on a college campus, or at least that’s the way I have felt for some time now. My dreams of going to college started, when I was a little boy. I have always anticipated the day, when I could go off to some campus and learn everything there was to learn in the world.
