The maturation of the Black male style

As we evolve as a culture, a race and a people, our style of dress is equivocally altered. We watch as the Black male says farewell to (but will never forget) baggy jeans, oversized white T-Shirts and the hip-hop style of dress and introduces the world to The New Age Black Gentleman. It is a replacement that is long overdue.
While there is an admiration and a respect for urban fashion and all that it has done for our culture, there has been a desire and need for its maturation.

Wishes for Sons

I wish them cramps.
I wish them a strange town
and the last tampon.
I wish them no 7-11.

I wish them one week early
and wearing a white skirt.
I wish them one week late.

Later I wish them hot flashes
and clots like you
wouldn’t believe. Let the
flashes come when they
meet someone special.
Let the clots come
when they want to.

Let them think they have accepted
arrogance in the universe,
then bring them to gynecologists

Exploring the Bordentown School

 For a 70-year period from 1866-1955, when America cared little about education for African Americans, and discrimination was both law and custom, the Bordentown School in Bordentown, New Jersey, was an educational utopia. An incubator for Black pride and intellect, it taught values, discipline and life skills to generations of Black children.

Brim’s oil on canvas work was chosen first of 28 other entries

Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced recently that Verbum Dei High School senior Terrell Brim was the winner of the annual 37th District Congressional Art Competition held at California State University Dominguez Hills.
Brim’s oil on canvas work was chosen first of 28 other entries, and will be displayed in Washington, D.C. for the year. He also recieved three plane tickets to Washington, D.C., so he and his family can attend the unveiling of his piece.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
