TastE Cakes

Crenshaw High students Anthony Lee and Le’queteta Brown, co-owners of TastE Cakes finished second in the fourth annual Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) business plan competition held last week at the USC Town and Gown, and now the duo, along with first place winner Edgar Holguin of South East High School (Plasma Framer), are off to New York to battle it out with other winners from around the national. Jean-Pierra Papouloute of Blair High School, developer of subRealty Clothing Co., placed third but will not go on to the nationals.

Advocate for academic enrichment

Sandra P. Daley, associate chancellor at the University of San Diego was recently awarded $25,000 by the California Wellness Foundation, and honored as a 2010 Champions of Health Professions Diversity. Daley advocated for academic enrichment programs that targeted disadvantaged youth in middle school and beyond. She along with Stanford University’s Ronald D. Garcia, and U.C. Berkeley’s Jeffrey S.

Creator of hit “Treat Her Like a Lady”

Ali Ollie Woodson, lead singer of the Motown quintet the Temptations, died of cancer recently in Los Angeles. He was 58.

Woodson was born as Ollie Creggett, on Oct. 12, 1951 in Detroit. He sang with the Temptations from 1984 to 1986, and then again from 1988 until 1996, when he began performing as a solo artist. Woodson also worked closely with Aretha Franklin and Bill Pinkney of The Drifters.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
