Carson-Torrance branch says card is racist and offensive

The Hallmark greeting card company recently created a furor because of a talking graduation card that contained stereotypical images and threatening messages against Black women.

The Carson-Torrance branch of the NAACP had initially talked with Hallmark and asked the company to remove the offensive card. They promised to do so, but when organization members conducted a spot check in their area, cards were found still in place at many locations.

Groundbreaking for a new $20 million outpatient health center

More than 300 people were on hand to celebrate the groundbreaking for a new $20 million outpatient health center in Watts that is expected to create 10,000 jobs and provide area residents with badly needed health services such as immunizations and treatment of conditions including sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis and communicable diseases.

Media ownership diversity may be threatened

At a Congressional field hearing recently, the public pressed the House Judiciary Committee to demand that Comcast guarantee expanded opportunities for minority-backed cable services, television shows, and films in exchange for approval of its proposed deal to take control of NBC Universal.

“It’s not going to happen without conditions,” said Alex Nogales, the president of the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

NFL’s return to L.A. a major topic

California Assemblyman Mike Davis recently held a hearing of the California State Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism, and Internet Media to discuss, “The Impact of Professional Sports Stadium and Arena Facilities on Local Economies.”

“We are here not only to discuss the impact that sports has on the local economy, we are here to also to continue the dialogue of the possibility of the National Football League coming back to Los Angeles,” said Assemblyman Davis.”

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
