They turn to Facebook

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.—Huntington Beach police turned to Facebook in an attempt to identify a woman raped and murdered in 1968 and to find her killer.

New state law

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A Los Angeles County supervisor today asked public health officials for a compliance report on nursing homes in light of a new state law that requires them to publicly display federal quality-of-care ratings.

Michael Antonovich, who supported the law, asked Department of Public Health officials for a compliance report and to provide the board with quarterly updates.

Trapped against wall

BUENA PARK, Calif.—A 71-year-old woman was killed in Buena Park when a car slammed into her daughter's sedan, forcing it onto a sidewalk where the victim was waiting to be picked up outside the assisted living facility where she lived, police reported.

Boon Soon Yang was struck by her daughter's car about 11:20 a.m. at 7252 Melrose St. and trapped against a wall, Sgt. Bill Kohanek said. Yang was taken in critical condition to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, Kohanek said.

Ronald L. Brown

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today appointed Ronald L. Brown as the county's public defender.

Brown, the first black man to hold the post, will be paid an annual salary of $270,000.

He has 29 years of experience with the public defender's office. As an assistant public defender, he has supervised adult operations since 2006, managing 10 branches, 26 area offices, about 400 attorneys and more than 100 investigators and administrative staff.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
