One of the contenders will replace Wendy Greuel

Prior to Laura Chick taking office as Los Angeles city controller in 2001, few in the public really paid close attention to the audits that were the exclusive domain of that department.

The charter establishes the controller as an elected official and gives that individual responsibility for serving as the auditor and chief accounting officer of the city.

Contestants in mayoral, Council races and public invited

Two forums will be held to give voters an opportunity to hear the viewpoints of candidates in runoff elections in Compton.

The first is May 23 from 6-8 p.m. in the Compton City Council Chambers, 205 S. Willowbroook Ave.
The second will follow on May 25 at noon, also in the City Council Chambers.

The forums will feature mayoral runoff candidates Aja Brown versus former mayor Omar Bradley; and Second District Councilwoman Lillie Dobson facing off against challenger Isaac Galvan.

Lamell McMorris appointed chairman

 
Public affairs expert and human rights advocate Lamell McMorris has been appointed chairman of the National Diversity Advisory Council of the American Red Cross.

McMorris is the founder and CEO of Perennial, a Washington, D.C.-based family of businesses.

He will fulfill a one-year term beginning immediately. “I am excited and humbled by the trust and confidence that Chairman Bonnie McElveen-Hunter and the board of governors have placed in me,” said McMorris.

Luncheon at old Engine Company 30

Firefighters of the past to the present-day gathered May 30 at the African American Firefighter Museum (old Engine No. 30) luncheon at 14th Street and Central Avenue to pay tribute to the men who opened the door for them nearly 60 years ago.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
