Nancy Pearlman re-elected to LACCD board

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — An educator/attorney narrowly defeated a former assistant to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to win a seat on the Los Angeles Unified School District board, according to unofficial election results released today.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Monica Ratliff had 51.9 percent of the vote, giving her a 1,464-vote advantage over former Villaraigosa aide Antonio Sanchez, 31.

Received 54 percent of the vote

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — City Councilman Eric Garcetti emerged victorious today in the race to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, ending a nearly two-year campaign that saw record-breaking spending and was punctuated by a spate of attack ads in the waning weeks of the race.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Garcetti had 54 percent of the vote, compared to 46 percent for City Controller Wendy Greuel.

Did not comment on number of employees affected

Sports media giant ESPN gave some of its 7,000 employees pink slips on Tuesday, the network said in a statement.

The Bristol, Connecticut-based company said it was looking at the financial bottom line.

“We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs. While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive,” the statement said.

Lead team to franchise record 56 victories

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Clippers fired coach Vinny Del Negro today, even though he guided the team to a franchise-record 56 victories and the first division championship in its 43-season history.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
