Willie Hagan had been interim since 2012

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Cal State Board of Trustees today named a Cal State Fresno administrator as the new president of Cal State Los Angeles and appointed the interim president at Cal State Dominguez Hills to the permanent position.

William A. Covino, the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Cal State Fresno, said he was honored by the appointment and looked forward to moving to Los Angeles.

Harvey Milk Champions of Change

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Long Beach, and Redondo Beach Mayor Michael A. Gin will be among 10 openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elected or appointed officials who will be honored at the White House today as Harvey Milk Champions of Change for their commitment to equality and public service.

Lara became the first openly gay person of color to be elected to the California Senate in 2012. He was elected to the Assembly in 2010 and became the first LGBT chair of the Latino Legislative Caucus.

Defeated Councilman Dennis Zine

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Attorney Ron Galperin will become the next Los Angeles city controller thanks to a comfortable defeat of termed-out Councilman Dennis Zine, according to final election results released today.

Galperin, 49, is an attorney who sits on two volunteer city commissions, one focused on revenue efficiency and the other on quality and productivity.

New discounts being introduced

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Starting July 1, Auto Club insurance customers will get a 4.1 percent rate reduction on policies, thanks to new discounts being introduced, state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said today.

“With the economy still recovering, this significant decrease delivers savings to more than 1 million drivers in Southern California,” Jones said.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
