Group to rally outside for presidency run

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will be in Beverly Hills tonight to accept an award honoring her public service while a group holds a rally nearby to urge her to make another White House run.

Clinton will receive the inaugural Warren Christopher Public Service Award from the Pacific Council on International Policy at a gala at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.

Blames boyfriend for the killings

COMPTON, Calif. — A 16-year-old girl charged with murdering her mother and stepfather tearfully told a Compton jury today that she did not take part in the killings and blamed her boyfriend for them.

Cynthia Alvarez testified that she was outside her family’s Compton mobile home when she heard her mother shout her name and later heard her boyfriend, Giovanni Gallardo, call for her, the Los Angeles Times reported.

When she went back inside the home, she found her mother dead, she testified, according to The Times.

Should include gay adult volunteers and staff members

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A Boy Scouts of America policy change that would admit gay boys should be extended to include gay adult volunteers and staff members, the Western Los Angeles County Council of the Scouts said today.

The council, which represents more than 14,000 local Scouts, is calling for a policy that would include gay Scout leaders as well as gay Scouts. The resolution to allow homosexual Scouts will be voted on this month by the 285 Boy Scout Councils across the country.

Intentional act of arson

COMPTON, Calif. — A pickup truck was driven into a business in Compton this morning, causing both the vehicle and the building to catch fire, and investigators believe the crash was an intentional act of arson.

The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. at a strip mall at the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Pine Street, said the watch commander of the sheriff’s Compton Station.

The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene and was not immediately apprehended, he said.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
