The Gang Alternative Program (GAP) lauded

The GAP program, part of the “My Gangfree Life” anti-gang mission, reported positive gains at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Carson City Council. Since 2002, GAP (Gang Alternative Program) has distributed more than $250,000 in Carson, promoting anti-gang activities and recently allocated $10,000 for the city’s elementary schools as part of its “Step Up” after-school initiative.

Meeting at the Biltmore Hotel downtown

Following her tenure as a multiple-term representative from California’s 36th Congressional District, Jane Harman has served for the past three years as the first female director of the Woodrow Wilson Center, a Washington, D.C.-based foreign policy think tank. In that capacity, she continues her interest in matters of national security, which she addressed at a town hall meeting recently at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Doctors administered painkillers that caused a heart attack

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Former USC defensive end Armond Armstead won some legal points today as a judge ruled in his favor in his lawsuit alleging team doctors gave him painkillers that caused a heart attack and damaged his potential as an NFL player.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos said Armstead’s complaint included enough specifics to support, for now, his allegations of battery, medical negligence and negligent infliction of emotional distress against Dr. James Tibone and University Park Health Center.

Suspect fled

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A 46-year-old man died after being punched multiple times outside a liquor store in South Los Angeles, police said today.

The assault occurred at 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, near Arlington Avenue, said Detective Gus Villanueva of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
