First graduation in more than 10 years

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Twenty-nine Los Angeles police officers graduated today from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program — the LAPD’s first DARE graduation in 10 years — and will soon be assigned to teach fifth- and sixth-graders its life-skills curriculum aiming at preventing youth drug abuse.

Audible gasp in courtroom after revelation

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A top AEG executive referred to Michael Jackson as “a freak” and another called him “creepy” just hours before their company signed the pop icon to a huge concert deal.

The revelation brought an audible gasp in the Los Angeles courtroom at the wrongful death trial Wednesday and left fans crying.

Jackson’s mother and children are suing AEG Live for the negligent hiring, retention or supervision of Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death.

Two memorial services set

Attorney Carl A. Earles, a native of Hemphill, Texas, died Saturday, May 18. Memorial services, beginning today, will be held at two locations.

He was born on June 24, 1922, and passed a little more than a month shy of his 91st birthday.

Earles received a bachelor of science degree from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, in 1943, and after graduation immediately enlisted in the United States Army. He served with distinction in the European Theater with the field artillery division and attended chemical warfare school.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
