Sixth consecutive day

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose to its highest amount since Oct. 14, 2008 today, increasing a half-cent to $3.45.

The average price is 5.5 cents more than a week ago, 7.1 cents higher than one month ago and 42 cents above what it was one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The average price has increased six consecutive days—1.1 cents both Wednesday and Thursday, nine-tenths of a cent Friday, 1.4 cents Saturday, six-tenths of a cent Sunday and a half-cent today.

The Orange County average price rose to its highest amount since Oct. 13, 2008 today, increasing one-tenth of a cent to $3.403, 5.3 cents more than a week ago, 7 cents higher than one month ago and 43.2 cents above what it was one year ago.

The Orange County average price has increased six consecutive days—1.2 cents Wednesday, 1.3 cents Thursday, nine-tenths of a cent Friday, 1.5 cents Saturday, a half-cent Sunday and one-tenth of a cent today.

Analysts cite high oil prices as the reason for the rising gasoline prices.

Crude oil costs account for two-thirds to three-quarters of the price of a gallon of gasoline, according to Tupper Hull, vice president of strategic communications for the Western States Petroleum Association, a trade association representing oil companies in six western states.

The price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell 71 cents in late-morning trading today to $88.32.
