Southland gasoline prices again set 2010 highs
Price of oil rose to its highest point
LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose to its high for the year today for a third consecutive day, increasing 1.3 cents to $3.203.
A 1.9-cent increase Saturday put the price past its previous high for 2010, $3.156, which was reached on May 8. The average price rose another 2.2 cents Sunday.
The average price is 6.9 cents more than a week ago, 9.1 cents more than a month ago and 27.7 cents more than this time last year, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
The Orange County average price also set a new high for the year for a third consecutive day, increasing 1.3 cents to $3.199.
A 1.8-cent increase Saturday put the average price past its previous high for 2010, $3.158, which was reached on Aug. 12. The average price rose another 1.9 cents on Sunday.
The Orange County average price is 7.2 cents more than a week ago, 9.5 cents more than a month ago and 28.5 cents more than this time last year.
The yearly highs come as the price of oil rose to its highest point since early October 2008. The price of a barrel of benchmark oil for January delivery increased 11 cents to $89.30 today in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after rising 6.5 percent last week.
Analysts attribute the increasing oil prices to the declining worth of the dollar, which means it takes more dollars to purchase a commodity.
The weakness of the dollar also prompts investors to buy commodities which have a steady demand, driving up prices.

The average price is 6.9 cents less than one week ago and 8.6 cents lower than a month ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. However, the average price is 57.2 cents higher than a year ago.

The average price is 5.5 cents more than a week ago, 7.1 cents higher than one month ago and 42 cents above what it was one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The average price is 4.3 cents less than a week ago, 11.9 cents less than a month ago and 5.3 cents less than this time last year, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
The decreases began Aug. 14, a day after nine increases in 10 days pushed the average price to $3.155, one-tenth of a cent less than its high for the year.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.—For the 15th year in a row, the Automobile Club of Southern California will offer free towing during the Fourth of July weekend in an attempt to keep drunken drivers off the road.
The Tipsy Tow program will be available to intoxicated drivers from 6 p.m. Saturday until 11:59 p.m. Monday 13 counties served by the Auto Club.
Motorists, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts or passengers of a drinking driver can call (800) 400-4AAA for a free tow to the driver’s residence of up to seven miles away.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.—After a major increase in Fourth of July travel last year, the number of Southern Californians expected to hit the roads and airways over the approaching holiday weekend is expected to dip by 2.3 percent from 2010, the Automobile Club of Southern California announced today.
According to the Auto Club, nearly 2.9 million Southland residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the Fourth of July weekend, a slight drop from last year’s 2.97 million travelers.
