Los Angeles, Orange County gasoline prices continue to fall

Still higher than a year ago

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County fell today for the 11th consecutive day, dropping seven-tenths of a cent to $3.72, the lowest amount since Feb. 26.

The average price is 6.9 cents less than one week ago and 8.6 cents lower than a month ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. However, the average price is 57.2 cents higher than a year ago.

The Orange County average price also fell today for the 13th consecutive day, dropping a half-cent to $3.707, the lowest amount since Feb. 26, The Orange County average price is 6.4 cents less than one week ago and 8.1 cents lower than one month ago. However, the average price is 55.8 cents higher than a year ago.

Analysts credit the declining pump price to the lower price of crude oil.

The price of a barrel of benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange settled at $79.30 Tuesday, the lowest since Sept. 29. However, the price rose $3.59 Wednesday and $2.83 Thursday before falling 34 cents Friday, settling at $85.38.

Crude oil costs account for two-thirds to three-quarters of the price of a gallon of gasoline, according to Tupper Hull of the Western States Petroleum Association, a trade association representing oil companies in six western states.

    A 1.9-cent increase Saturday put the price past its previous high for 2010, $3.156, which was reached on May 8. The average price rose another 2.2 cents Sunday.

    SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—Toyota led all automotive brands among new vehicle purchases by African Americans in 2010, according to Polk. Total new vehicle registrations among this audience reached 641,090, an increase of 11.5 percent over 2009—and represented 7.4 percent of all new vehicle registrations in 2010. Furthermore, the African American market volume increase was 68.6 percent greater than the non-ethnic market increase of 6.8 percent.

    LOS ANGELES  - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County fell for the 24th consecutive day, decreasing six-tenths of a cent to $3.015.

    The average price is 4.3 cents less than a week ago, 11.9 cents less than a month ago and 5.3 cents less than this time last year, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

    The decreases began Aug. 14, a day after nine increases in 10 days pushed the average price to $3.155, one-tenth of a cent less than its high for the year.

  • Gunman shooting at cars in Hollywood killed by cops -

    HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—Police shot and killed a suspect who was firing at vehicles in Hollywood, and at least one other person was wounded.

    Officers were sent to the area of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street about 10:20 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Officer Cleon Joseph of the Media Relations office. The suspect, who was not immediately identified, died at the scene.
