It is common knowledge that budget cuts in public schools often mean so-called “non-essential” programs like art, music, etc. are scaled back drastically or eliminated all together.
A group of retired educators in Compton saw this happening in their local schools and decided to step in and try to make a difference.
In 2004, they formed the Compton Conservatory of Music with the intention of supplementing the music education programs in Compton Schools.
Today, each Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Compton High School, children in third through 12th grades have the opportunity to take lessons on piano, guitar, strings, percussion and woodwind instruments.
The 16 weeks of instructions cost $100 per child, however Conservatory spokesperson Fred Easter, said no child is turned away for lack of funds.
Instruments are provided by the Compton School district, through a few donated items and by the families of students.
Youngsters learn to play the instruments, and as they progress are taught theory.
Easter said a number of the participants currently performing in small ensembles, and because the Compton Conservatory is an extension of the nonprofit Southeast Symphony, several youngsters have even been proficient enough to play with this group.
In addition to fees from parents, the Conservatory augments its budget each year by holding a fundraiser. This year the event is called “An Entertaining Evening of Music.”
It will be held Feb. 26 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Carson Community Center, 801 E. Carson St.
Tickets are a tax-deductible donation of $45 and can be purchased by calling Easter at (310) 704-6635 or Everett Turner at (310) 537-5027.
The concert will feature Sylvia Rodriguez performing jump and swing music; Leonard Davis singing ballads; Shanda Baylor performing old standards; Phil Edwards rendering newer standards, and they will all be backed by the big band sound of The Nova Troubadors.
Other performers include The Damon Rente’ Quintet and the Central Avenue Swing Dancers with Chester Whitmore.
Those who cannot attend the concert, but want to support the organization, can donate to the Compton Conservatory of Music at P.O. Box 4756, Compton, CA 90224.
