California State Assembly Speaker-elect Karen Bass and Timothy A. Simon, Commissioner with the California Public Utilities Commission, (pictured right) were both honored during a special recognition reception held May 2 at the City Club on Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles.

The event was co-sponsored by the Black Business Association of Los Angeles, the California Black Chamber of Commerce, the National Black Business Council (NBBC) and Our Weekly newspaper to recognize the accomplishments of these two public figures. Bass has been selected by her Assembly colleagues as the first African-American woman to head this body and will take over the post after her inauguration May 13. Simon, a lawyer by education and training, was appointed to the CPUC by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in February 2007. At the reception, Bass and Simon were honored by a host of dignitaries including (pictured on left) Joe Hernandez of AEG, Elva Lima with Verizon, Joe Alderate with Southern California Edison, Donna Burke of AT & T and Mary Ann Mitchell from the NBBC (far right).
