Financial constraints challenge their educational pursuits

WASHINGTON—Minority students pursuing health careers are far more motivated by a desire to serve their community than by potential financial rewards, according to new research released recently by United Health Foundation.

When asked what is the single most important motivation, 46 percent of minority scholars cited having a positive impact on people’s lives as their top reason for pursuing a health career. Only 17 percent cited salary or income.

Bernice Coleman among esteemed nurse leaders joining 2012 class of elite fellows

Bernice Coleman, Ph.D., (American College of Nurse Practioners) ACNP, lead heart transplant nurse practitioner in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, will be among the nursing elite inducted this fall as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing.

The second annual Powerful Black Family Celebration hosted by the American Heart Association will be held Saturday from noon-3 p.m. at the Van Ness Recreation Center, 5720 Second Ave. in Los Angeles. The event will feature educational, life-improving activities as well as tributes to former UCLA Bruin Walt Hazzard and Pastor Billy Ingram. Both died of cardiovascular disease.

Each year, on June 27, the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA), in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), AIDS.gov, and other national and local entities across the country organizes National HIV Testing Day. This unique initiative sends the message, “Take the Test, Take Control,” to those at risk from HIV from those already living with HIV.
