Spitzer resigns after scandal
David Paterson becomes New Yorks next governor
New York governor Eliot Spitzer announced his resignation yesterday in the wake of reports that linked him to a high-priced prostitution ring.
Spitzers resignation has made Lieutenant Governor David Paterson New Yorks first African-American and first legally blind governor.
Paterson earned his bachelors degree in history from Columbia University and completed his law degree at Hofstra Law School. In 2002, Paterson became the New York State Senates minority leader, the first non-white legislative leader in New York state history.
In 2006, Paterson was elected New Yorks first African-American lieutenant governor.
Paterson, an adjunct professor at Columbias School for International and Public Affairs, lives in Harlem with his wife, Michelle Paige Paterson, and their two children.
