Highest school dropout rate among all races

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—By the second grade, African American students in Los Angeles County demonstrate significant learning gaps that only widen with age and lead to the highest school dropout rate among all races, according to a new report released today.

Alumni foundation has problems with any renewal

Five years after Green Dot Public Schools made history by becoming the first outside organization to assume control of a low-performing high school (Alain Leroy Locke High) in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the organization’s agreement is up for renewal and the matter will be taken up by the school board at its Feb. 12 meeting.

Labor group rallies for reduction in student citations

As the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) begins its academic year weeks earlier than normal, Superintendent John Deasy laid out his vision, the accomplishments and the concerns within the district during his annual message to the district recently held at George Washington Preparatory High School. One of those concerns was brought to the forefront on Aug. 9 during a rally led by the Labor/Community Strategy Center Community Rights Campaign (CRC) and involving students, parents and teachers.

New schedule allows students to finish first semester before winter break

Students in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will start classes this coming school year sooner than ever before.

Pupils in K-12 will begin the 2012-13 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 14, three weeks earlier than usual. The so-called early start calendar had been previously adopted by about 20 schools, mostly in the San Fernando Valley, and now will be rolled out districtwide.
