Christopher Owens Youth Football Camp

Two generations of the Owens family have matriculated through the halls of Dorsey High School, and last Saturday much of clan was back at the “D-House” to give back through the one-day Christopher Owens Youth Football Camp. Nearly half of the 20 to 25 volunteers who helped put on the camp for the varsity and junior varsity Dorsey football team were family members.

High schoolers prepare for green careers

High school seniors and recent graduates, who are not in summer camp and don’t have jobs, could benefit from a unique boot camp.

The High School Powerline Academy Camp is free and will be held at the East L.A. Skills Center from July 26 to Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Six local campuses face ax

LOS ANGELES - Twenty alternative schools in Los Angeles County will close Wednesday, but the superintendent of schools said she is trying to raise support from local school districts so the campuses can be reopened.

Superintendent Darline P. Robles appeared before the Board of Supervisors to respond to a proposed 30-day moratorium on school closings by Supervisor Don Knabe, who had hoped to give the Office of Education and county staffers time to find alternatives to the shutdowns.

Youth and adults can enter

“I’m bored.”

These are two dreaded words that can send the parents of vacationing children running for the hills, and with summer school not really an option for most youngsters who are part of the Los Angeles Unified School Districts, moms and dads are going to have to get a lot more creative this year about figuring out how to keep their youngsters occupied.
