Annie Turnbo Malone

Pioneering cosmetologist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Annie Turnbo Malone was born Aug. 9, 1869 in Metropolis, Ill. The 10th of 11 children born to Robert Turnbo, a poor farmer, and Isabella Cook Turnbo, Annie was raised by an older sister, after her parents died, while she was young.

Growing up, Malone loved playing in her sisters’ hair, creating fabulous new styles. That interest would lead her to become  a leader in hair care, although she never finished high school.

New standards, programs, and funds introduced

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell has been very busy recently overseeing the transformation of California’s education system.

First, the State Board of Education recently voted to adopt the Common Core Standards which were developed to establish consistent and clear education standards for English language arts and mathematics that would better prepare students for success in the competitive economy.

Teacher transfers cause controversy

LAWNDALE, Calif - Hundreds of Lawndale High School students walked out of class to protest a decision to involuntarily transfer 50 of their top teachers (who were notified of the transferral by the principal, during the middle of class) to Leuzinger High School, one of the lowest performing schools in the state. According to Academic Performance Index (API) scores—the state’s measuring tool of student achievement—Leuzinger is in the bottom 10 percent of public high schools in the state.
