Expert offers tips and advance

If you wait until spring of your senior year in high school to begin applying for scholarships, or until you’ve been accepted at a college or university, you have missed half of the deadlines for these financial awards.

That’s the word from Mark Kantrowitz, creator of the websites FinAid and Fastweb.

There are two periods when most of the deadlines occur—fall and spring—said Kantrowitz, who advises students and their families to begin looking early for scholarships.

CARSON, Calif.—Leapwood Elementary School has won a garden that will grow something much more precious than vegetables or flowers. It is a garden where minds grow, and it’s called a Reading Garden.

Cathy Huang of Stowers Elementary School

ALHAMBRA, Calif.—Cathy Huang, a sixth-grader from Stowers Elementary School in Cerritos, won the Los Angeles County Elementary Spelling Bee today, beating out 24 fellow champions from school districts and charter schools by correctly spelling sequester and legitimize.

Justin Woo, a fifth-grader from Oak Mesa Elementary School in La Verne, finished second in the bee held at the Almansor Court Conference Center in Alhambra.

Both qualify for the state bee, which will be held April 16 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton.
